Getting Around

While Calypso and its beach are fun places to spend your time, there are many other places you will want to visit. Most visitors without their own boat arrive on Elbow Cay via ferry and then pick up golf carts, boats, and bicycles, which are all readily available for rent. It is critical that they be reserved far in advance of your arrival as quantities are limited.

The waters and surrounding cays are a boater's paradise. Most areas of interest are protected and safe even for those of limited boating experience. Several companies rent a variety of boats and are accustomed to educating newcomers in the safe enjoyment of the area. Ask the boat rental agents for recommendations based on the number in your party and your boating experience.

The owners of Calypso prefer the 20' or 23' Albury boats, which were designed and built on the neighboring island of Man-O-War They are  roomy, sturdy, ride well, and perfect for enjoying the surrounding waters. The Alburys rented by Island Marine,  Barfoot Boat Rentals, and  Cats Paw are exceptionally well maintained, probably the best of all the rental boats, and the rental companies are located on or near Elbow Cay for easy pickup/return.  Having a good boat, like having a good house, will greatly enhance your enjoyment of the area.

Golf Carts

Nothing beats the convenience of having your own golf cart. These have become quite popular on Elbow Cay, if not essential, and allow you to visit the more distant parts of the island as well as providing a convenient way to transport groceries, people and gear. (You will be surprised at how often you will visit the grocery store.) Two or more carts are typically necessary for Calypso renters, as overloading carts is not allowed. (Children and teenagers may not drive carts, and this is enforced.) Most carts are gas, and a few electric carts are available. The tranquility of the island and pleasant conversation are far more enjoyable in the silence of an electric cart, and worth the minor inconvenience of charging your cart overnight.

Bicycles are great for those that prefer a more aerobic way of getting around. For older children, bicycles can be a ticket to freedom as long as they are cautious… driving on the left side of the road goes against most people's experience.

Both ferries leave from "the crossing" and are adjacent to each other. Taxi drivers know where to go.

There are no cars available for rent on Elbow Cay, nor is there any reason to need one as most people use boats, golf carts, and bicycles, which also helps preserve the island's tranquility and unique ambiance.

For those choosing to explore the large adjacent Greater Abaco Island, cars are available for rent in Marsh Harbour. Before renting a car, consider the benefits of local knowledge by hiring a taxi.

A Word of Caution

Golf carts don't have seatbelts or any other safety devices to protect passengers. Young children can fall out with surprising ease. Road traffic in some areas can be dangerous to pedestrians or cyclists. Boats are likewise potentially dangerous. A serious injury can easily be life-threatening due to the difficulty in receiving urgent medical attention on an island in a foreign country. Use good judgment. Dangerous or careless operation may result in the rental company taking the boat, bike, or cart.
